I exercise and try to eat healthy but my knees always give in - so what types of food could I eat beside Ca 2 to aid the strengthening of my joints, ligaments etc?
It can be very frustrating when you body lets you down and does not let you do the exercise you want to do. But the good news is that there are foods that you can eat which should help your situation!
You should base your diet on whole foods and alkaline forming foods, which cause less acidity and inflammation in the body. Generally speaking this means whole grains (such as brown rice), vegetables, beans, pulses, tofu, oily fish, seeds, nuts, eggs and non-citrus fruits. Ginger is also a natural anti-inflammatory food and if you include it in your diet you may find this helpful. Just grate the ginger and add to stir-fries, soups and stews or into a glass of warm water with some lemon for a refreshing drink. You should continue to eat a calcium rich diet too. Besides dairy products, good sources of calcium include grains, sesame seeds, nuts, dried figs, broccoli and other dark green leafy vegetables.
Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Some people also find that avoiding milk is helpful in claming joint inflammation, so it may be worth a try. You can use soya, rice or goats milk as a substitute for cow's milk.
It is also important to reduce foods that can cause inflammation too. This includes red meat, dairy produce, fried food and processed foods. Also be aware that too much salt can lead to fluid retention and acidity and citrus fruits can increase joint pain, so these are not recommended.
