I have struggled to lose weight for years, are there any foods I should avoid with the above condition? I have been told that anything that says low fat I should avoid, is this right?
Hi
Thanks for your query. Unfortunately an underactive thyroid does make it more difficult to lose weight if it’s not properly corrected. So the first port of call is always to talk to your GP to make sure the medication you get is correct. Beyond that it’s calorie counting that is key and restricting fat intake is usually an advisable part of that. Perhaps the “low fat” foods you’ve heard you should avoid are those that are processed to be lower fat rather than naturally low fat or fat free (an example of the first would be a reduced fat ready meal curry or carbonara dish and the second, lean chicken or fish with vegetables). That would be logical to me, but avoiding everything that’s low fat certainly would not!
Nutrients that help thyroid function and which it is worth making sure you get in sufficient quantity in your diet include iodine found in the highest amounts in low fat dairy products, fish and seafood (especially haddock) and selenium, found in the highest amounts in canned tuna fish and Brazil nuts.
I do hope this helps.
Best wishes
Angela
