I play a lot of football and was wondering what is the best thing to have as a pre-game meal? I usually have some pasta and chicken with a passatta sauce or a jacket potato with beans (no butter) but I was wondering what a proper nutritionist would suggest. Thanks, Rob
Hi Rob
Your pre exercise suggestions actually sound pretty good. Basically the key is to try to eat a mainish meal a couple of hours before you exercise, and this is best comprised of medium to slow releasing carbs, such as pasta, potatoes, brown rice or grainy bread combined with a little protein such as tuna or chicken. Then about half an hour before you play football it would be a good idea to top up with something higher GI like a handful of jelly beans, some dried fruit or a couple or really ripe bananas. If you’re struggling to keep to your calorie intake this pre exercise snack isn’t so essential, but do make sure you take in fluids to increase your hydration level.
