How much carbohydrate should I be eating in a day? I haven't been looking at the carbohydrate in the food that I am eating but was just wondering if I should be.

Our expert says...

Hi.

As we all know, a balanced, healthy diet contains carbohydrates, protein and good fats and this is a good question, as it is always sensible to watch the overall balance of our diets. Each of these food groups performs a very different function in the body and, for example, you will soon feel tired and lethargic if you don't eat enough carbohydrate, as it is the body's main source of fuel. Eating a well-balanced diet is also important in ensuring that you receive all the vitamins, minerals and fibre that you need.

So, to answer your question more precisely, it is recommended that around 30-35% of our calories should come from fat, around 15% from protein and 50-55% from carbohydrate. For 1400 calories a day, as an example, this means that you should be eating around 735 calories (52.5%) from carbohydrate, which is about 183g, and 210 calories (15%) from protein, about 42g.

I wouldn't recommend that you get too hung up and start calculating these figures daily. However, it can be useful to know how your overall food for the day should be broken down just so you can keep an eye on it.
