Q.

How many nuts should I be eating?

I heard that pistachio nuts were good for snacking on. When doing the diary for here I checked out the calories and fat content on the back and they were really really high. I made sure I got unsalted as well!
Could you tell me what a recommended portion a day would be please?

It's true that nuts are really high in fat (and calories), but it's the good type of fat that helps to keep your heart healthy. Nuts are also a rich source of various minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium and zinc, and eating nuts around five times a week is associated with a lower risk of heart disease. However you should only have a handful a day (no more than about 25 grams). This way you'll reap all the benefits whilst still being able to stay within your calorie allowance. The other upside of nuts is that they are a satiating snack with a low glycaemic index which will help keep you fuller than a couple of biscuits for example.
