Q.

Can I learn to like food?

I don't eat any veg as it is, I'll eat veg soup or have it in a smoothie but I want to eat it as it comes. Can you learn to like foods or should I just grow up and eat it?

A.

Our expert says...

Hello,

Well, you can learn to like foods so it is worth persevering!  Your taste buds do renew themselves every few weeks and this is the reason why we can adapt to things like tea without sugar over a period of time.  So I would encourage you to keep at it, as veg are so good for you.......... but you don’t need me to tell you that!

Having said that, veg are still good for you if you eat them in a soup (preferably fresh or chilled soup, rather than tinned) or drink them in a smoothie, so these are valid ways to get some of your 5 a day.

Maybe you need to experiment with new ways of cooking veg to make them a bit more exciting for you.  Have you tried stir-fried veg?  Chop a variety of different coloured veg into thin strips and quickly cook in a little (very hot) olive oil, sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve.  If the oil dries up you can add cold water by the tablespoon until the veg are cooked – the veg cooks in the steam and oil and this saves on calories.

Also, add extra veg to casseroles, stews and curries or mash them into potatoes - that way you don’t even notice them! Hope this gives you some ideas.
