I have a friend on another diet plan who talks about particular foods which actually HELP you to lose weight quicker. These include tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, peppers, onions etc. I know these all have a high water content and very few calories but is this fact or fiction? Also, she says drinking a glass of water with a half lemon squeezed in can speed weight loss. What is your opinion?
I am afraid that there are no foods to my knowledge that help you lose weight. It is a nice thought, but I am afraid that life is not that simple!
The foods that you mention are certainly good foods to eat on a diet, as they are high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and water. In other words, they are nutrient-rich, health promoting and can be very filling. All these are important factors when you are trying to lose weight. So, I would recommend eating them as part of your daily diet, but not expect them to increase your weight loss.
Drinking water and lemon will also not speed up weight loss. It is a good drink to avoid dehydration and is refreshing and cleansing too. It is believed that if you drink hot water and lemon first thing in the morning, it cleanses your digestive tract of any mucous build-up that may have occurred overnight and kick-starts the liver, improving digestive function. Again, these are all beneficial side effects, but are unlikely to increase the speed of weight loss.
Unfortunately, the hard fact is that to lose weight we need to eat fewer calories and use up more calories up by exercising. If I had an easier answer, I would share it with you and would also be a very popular (and rich) nutritionist!
