Hi I have recently started using NC to help keep count of my calorie intake and lose pounds that have been gained from weekend over-indulgences. However, after reducing calorie intake to 1400 per day and walking 60 minutes to and from work in the heat, I am feeling very tired. Do you have any suggestions of foods I could supplement my diet with to help reduce the tiredness - especially as I have only been doing this for 5 days. Or will it simply get better after a couple of weeks? Zoe
Hi Zoe,
Thanks for your question. Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel and energy for our bodies. After digestion and absorption, carbohydrates provide glucose which is transported in our blood to all areas of our body for energy.
This means that the type of carbohydrate that we eat can play a direct part in the way that we feel. Brown, complex carbohydrates, such as wholemeal bread, brown rice and wholewheat pasta, take longer to digest and absorb and contain far more nutrients than their white counterparts. Because of this, they provide a slow, steady supply of glucose and energy to our bodies. I would certainly recommend eating these, if you are not already, to help alleviate tiredness.
Below are my top tips for feeling full of energy:
· Eat wholegrain carbohydrates and cereals
· Wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholewheat pasta or noodles
· Include nuts and seeds in your diet
· Eat lean protein and try pulses, beans and lentils
· Eat 4-5 servings of vegetables a day
· Enjoy 2-3 pieces of fruit a day
· Drink plenty of water for good hydration
And cut back on:
· White carbohydrates – bread, rice, pasta
· Sugar and sugar containing foods
· Processed foods
· Coffee, tea and caffeine containing drinks and food
· Alcohol, as this is a stimulant and high in sugar
· And always eat breakfast!
I am sure that walking for an hour each day during the hot weather also contributed to your tiredness and, unfortunately, that probably won’t last for long!
