Your aim today is to ensure you fit in at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise. Official health recommendations are for us to complete 30 mins of moderate intensity exercise 5 times per week (or 150 minutes a week). This means activity which raises your heart rate and makes you a little breathless – you should be able to hold a conversation, but not sing.
So why not grab a friend for a catch up and a walk around the park? Fire up YouTube and find a workout to follow? Or even give your house a good, energetic, clean! The choice is yours.
The benefits of physical activity go far beyond just burning extra calories to help with weight management. Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce our risk of various illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. Studies observed these benefits in overweight individuals even without weight loss, so the effects are likely to be from physical activity alone. In addition, a sedentary lifestyle can significantly increase our risk of the illnesses mentioned above, so prioritising some daily exercise is key to staying healthy.
...and it's not just our physical health that benefits either! Exercise is proven to boost our mood thanks to the release of endorphins (think 'feel-good' chemicals), so keeping active regularly can help us stay healthy and happy!
